Lakshadweep is a protected territory, so every visitor who is not a resident needs an entry permit before travelling - whether you fly to Agatti or come by ship.
What changed in 2026
In a circular dated 29 April 2026, the Lakshadweep Administration relaxed the rules for the Tourist category:
- A local sponsor is no longer required for tourist permits.
- You no longer upload a Police Clearance Certificate (PCC) - the Lakshadweep Police now do the background check as part of approval.
Key rules to remember
- Apply at least 14 days before your travel date.
- The permit lists the exact islands you will visit (including transit points). You can only enter the islands on your permit.
- One application can cover up to six travellers.
- Agatti and Kavaratti can be used as transit points; transit stays are limited to about 12 hours.
- Carry a printed copy of the permit and the same photo ID you used to apply.
Book flights after the permit is clear
Plan your dates first, then confirm your permit before paying for flights, so a delay does not cost you money.
