Passenger ships run by the Lakshadweep Administration connect the mainland with the islands. It is slower than flying, but an experience of its own.
Ports
Most ships sail from Kochi. Some services also run from Kozhikode (Beypore) and Mangaluru to selected islands.
Journey time
Expect roughly 14 to 20 hours from Kochi, depending on the island and the route.
Tickets
- Ship tickets are released in limited quotas and sell out quickly, especially in season.
- You need a valid entry permit for the islands on your ticket.
- Classes range from bunk class to cabins with more privacy.
- Schedules can change at short notice, and services may be reduced in the monsoon (June to September).
Tips
- Carry snacks, water, motion-sickness tablets and a light jacket for the air-conditioning.
- Keep your ID and permit handy - they are checked at boarding.
